I run an RP guild/LS on my FFXI server.
( teal deer background info for the people who want to read it. )Okay, so that's all out of the way.
I will be heading off to law school in Cleveland in a month. I have an apartment and everything; I just need to move and get settled in.
Founder has told me that when I have to quit the game due to law school, he's going to toss the LS and move to a different server since there's nothing keeping him on the server where he is right now. When I asked him why he would move to a different server, he told me that he was tired of dealing with the assholes on our server (he participates a lot in endgame activities, which are usually chock full of drama, lying, backstabbing, hacks, and other assorted bullshittery). I told him that there are assholes on the endgame LSes on
every server, and that if he switched servers, he'd have to start all over again. Founder's response to this was, "Well, yeah, but it'll take me a while to figure out who the assholes are." Buh? True, he'd be able to transfer his character, levels, and items, but he'd have to start all over again getting to know people, start all over again with Dynamis points, and he'd still have to wind up dealing with greedy assholes since they seem to be drawn to endgame. So, IMO, switching servers = stupid idea. Especially since Founder does not have an easy time of it when it comes to meeting new people. At least he has friends and such on the server he's on right now.
I brought this up with OM last night when he finally got back on the game. OM thinks that Founder won't take well to a server transfer, and does not agree with his idea to scrap the LS. There are still people on there who enjoy RPing, however few they may be, and we are getting new members every week. True, I suppose that the more active players could always branch off and start their own RP guild. But after all the work that's gone into getting it to the point where it's at with the players that we have -- and they all have parts to play in the plot -- I don't feel as though it would be fair to the players for Founder to be like, "Well, since
ragabashtule left, y'all can just go fuck yourselves, and I'm switching servers. BYE!" /breaklinkshell
Y'know, I'm the only fucking one who approves member subscriptions and I'm the only fucking one who welcomes new players into the guild. I'm also the only fucking one who apparently gives a shit enough to contact players we haven't heard from in a while or
ever to ask them what's going on in their lives and why haven't we seen them in a while. Unfortunately, as OM said to me the other night, Founder is not really a good leader, but he is a great follower. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when it comes to RP and
running a guild, sorry, but
it is a bad thing. If you're going to be a GM, you need to fucking
LEAD. Not fucking run off when one of the stronger GMs (either me or OM) has to go pay attention to life due to law school or one's house getting struck by lightning. You have players who are
relying on you, and it's not fair to them to leave them shit out of luck.
It really makes me fucking sad to think that the guild will pretty much just go to shit when I leave since apparently Founder doesn't want to lead it in my absence. Yeah, that's real fucking fair to the players who actually go there to RP and get away from game drama. I don't even think he's given any thought to handing off leadership to one of the more active players who might like to take control.
So I'm really in kind of a sad position. I do
not agree with Founder's decision at all, but it
is ultimately his LS to run since I don't hold the keys to the linksack. Yes, the active players could branch off and form their own LS, and I do realise that. But why break something that isn't broken? I really don't get it, and it really is upsetting, and I know that the players won't like the decision at all -- especially since they most likely won't even be told about it. They'll just log into the LS one day expecting to RP and will instead receive the following message:
This linkshell has been broken and does not exist.
